Job description
An employee in this class participates in the operations of fire suppression and emergency medical services on an assigned shift. The employee performs a variety of technical, procedural, and regulatory methods and techniques relating to fire suppression and prevention, rescue, first aid, and equipment and apparatus operation. Responds to emergency situations requiring emergency medical attention and performs duties of an EMT/Paramedic. Acquires and maintains required State certification for Firefighter I and EMT/Paramedic. Work is performed under general supervision of the Fire Lieutenant

Graduation from high school or GED equivalency supplemented by training courses in firefighting, fire prevention, CPR/first aid, rescue, apparatus and equipment operation, and related fire sciences; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Performs difficult professional work providing management of Sanitation, Garage, Water, and Sewer operational activities; oversees administrative staff at the Public Works facility; manages work order system for utilities, fleet, and facilities. Work also includes purchasing equipment and maintaining an inventory; record-keeping of a variety of data from all Public Works/Public Utilities activities; and handling citizen problems and complaints. Work involves public contact both by phone and in person resolving problems and responding to complaints. The employee exercises judgment in the application of policies and practices. The employee is responsible for the education of the public of most of Public Works/Public Utilities services’ policies and procedures. This position is also responsible for assisting in the preparation of departmental budgets, monitoring, and ensuring compliance with city codes and state regulation, and related work as apparent or assigned under the direction of the Public Works Director. Departmental supervision is exercised over personnel within the department. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Public Works/Public Utilities Director.
Education and Experience
Associates/technical degree (bachelors preferred) in business management, public administration, or closely related field of study; extensive experience in public works operations and solid waste management, including considerable supervisory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Essential Duties and Tasks
· Works as a member of a trash, yard waste, or garbage collection crew to load trash, debris, and junked furniture and appliances from roadsides
· Works as a member of a leaf collection crew
· Picks up loose trash and litter along street
· Assists with dumping solid waste at transfer site or landfill
· Assists with cleaning and maintenance of trucks and tools
· Assists with other sanitation or public works crews as needed
Additional Job Duties
· Performs other related work as required
Education and Experience
Graduation from high school or GED equivalency and preferably some additional training in landscaping and horticulture operations.
Special Requirements
· Valid North Carolina driver’s license
